In short The first days of embryo development after transfer into the uterine cavity are usually a stressful period for patients, full of new experiences, which can also bring many concerns and doubts. The changes occurring in a woman’s body during this time are quite rapid and happen quickly. It is estimated that it usually takes approximately 10–12 days for the embryo to fully implant, after which the patient can take a pregnancy test.

Embryo transfer – what happens after the transfer?

After the key stage of the assisted reproductive procedure, the IVF transfer, the patient is usually advised to take hormonal medications that regulate hormone levels in the body and allow the embryo to develop under the most optimal conditions possible.

The patient should avoid excessive physical exertion after the transfer. During this time, it is advisable to refrain from lifting heavy objects and participating in extreme sports. The reproductive area should also not be exposed to excessive heat. An appropriate diet and rest are also recommended, as is following the doctor’s instructions regarding the use of specifically prescribed medications. Embryo implantation – stages of embryo development

The fertility clinic carefully monitors the embryo’s development in the laboratory until the time of transfer. Patients often wonder what happens to the embryo after it is transferred into the uterine cavity. Over the following days, the embryo continues its intensive development and attempts to implant in the endometrium. The individual stages depend on how many days old the transferred embryo was.

In the case of Day 2–3 embryos:

  • Day 1 after transfer – the embryo continues to divide.
  • Day 2 after transfer – the embryo develops into a blastocyst.
  • Day 3 after transfer – the blastocyst hatches from its surrounding membrane.
  • Days 4–6 after transfer – the embryo begins the implantation process, embedding itself in the uterine lining and penetrating progressively deeper into the endometrium.
  • Days 7–10 after transfer – the embryo, implanted in the uterine endometrium, continues to develop, and the production of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) begins.
  • Day 11 after transfer – the concentration of hCG in the body is high enough that it is recommended to take a pregnancy test.

In the case of Day 5–6 embryos, blastocyst transfer:

  • Day 1 after transfer – the blastocyst hatches from its surrounding membrane.
  • Days 2–3 after transfer – the embryo begins implantation, embedding itself in the uterine lining and penetrating progressively deeper into the endometrium.
  • Days 5–8 after transfer – the implanted embryo continues to develop in the uterine endometrium, and the production of hCG begins.
  • Day 9 after transfer – the concentration of hCG in the body is high enough for a pregnancy test to be performed.

Signs of pregnancy – when is the best time to take a pregnancy test?

Checking beta-hCG levels after embryo transfer is an important step in determining the outcome of the IVF procedure. Women are often highly attentive to any symptoms that could indicate that the embryo is implanting after the transfer. However, implantation itself is generally not felt, although mild implantation bleeding may occasionally occur. A pregnancy test is therefore crucial, with a blood test providing the most reliable result. Beta-hCG can be detected at a very early stage of pregnancy – in some cases, the test may already be positive 7–8 days after the embryos are transferred into the uterine cavity.

Waiting for the outcome of the transfer is extremely difficult for couples, which is why they often decide to take a test too early, when it may not yet detect the pregnancy. Patience is therefore recommended, as for the result to be as reliable as possible, the test should be performed no earlier than 10–14 days after the day of oocyte retrieval – explains Dr. Olaf Lindert, MD, PhD, from Klinika Bocian in Katowice.

How to calculate gestational age after embryo transfer?

Both a pregnancy achieved through IVF and one conceived naturally are dated from the first day of the last menstrual period. As a result of the hormonal stimulation used before the transfer, menstruation may sometimes be delayed or shifted. In such cases, the day of ovarian puncture and fertilization of the egg cells is considered the day of ovulation. From this date, 14 days should be subtracted to determine the hypothetical start date of the menstrual
