A Dream Come True

The first gynecologist we saw ordered basic hormone tests, monitored my ovulation and arranged a semen analysis for my husband. Then came a test to check whether my fallopian tubes were open. Of course, all the results were very good.

After several more unsuccessful months of medically stimulated cycles, we went to a fertility clinic. Wanting to investigate further, the doctor referred me for a diagnostic laparoscopy. While we were waiting for the procedure, he changed my stimulation medication, and after the very first month of taking it, we finally saw those long-awaited two lines.

Unfortunately, our joy did not last long. At the appointment to confirm the pregnancy, we discovered that it was an ectopic pregnancy located in my right fallopian tube. A decision was quickly made to perform a laparoscopy, during which, sadly, my right fallopian tube could not be saved. There were countless tears and one question that kept coming back: why us?

Six weeks after the procedure, we started stimulation again and resumed our fight, but this time from a more difficult position – I now had only one fallopian tube. We continued trying unsuccessfully for another six months. During that time, my left ovary did not respond to the medication at all, meaning there was no ovulation on the side where I still had a fallopian tube.

It was July 2016, just as Klinika Bocian in Katowice opened. We booked an appointment with Dr Adamczyk, determined to take a different approach rather than continuing with stimulation alone – either insemination or IVF. We were incredibly determined to have a child.

After speaking with Dr Adamczyk, we began the series of tests required before treatment, and in September we waited for my period so that we could start the procedure. The first stage – ovarian stimulation – took place in Katowice under the care of Dr Adamczyk, who was incredibly supportive and answered every question we had in detail.

The next stage, egg retrieval, meant a trip to Białystok. During the procedure on Saturday, October 8, six eggs were retrieved, but only two were suitable for fertilization. On Monday, the embryologist called to tell us the date of the transfer of our one and only embryo.

Once again, there were tears… Why only one?

We made another trip to Białystok to collect our precious little embryo on October 11. And from that moment, the longest two weeks of our lives began. I spent them at home. I stopped working and spent most of my time lying down, getting up only to go to the bathroom.

We had our first beta-hCG test on October 25 – our wedding anniversary – at Klinika Bocian. The result came back an hour later, and we cried tears of happiness.

One tiny embryo – and it turned out to be our lucky one.

Then came nine months of anxiety and stress, hoping that everything would be all right and that we would reach our happy ending. At first, I developed hypothyroidism, followed by four months of nausea and vomiting. Later, I developed pregnancy-induced hypertension and gestational diabetes, which was controlled through diet.

The most frightening period came between weeks 29 and 31, when my blood pressure became extremely difficult to control. At that point, an early delivery was being considered for both my baby’s safety and my own. After 14 days of treatment in hospital and finding the right medication, the situation was brought under control for another six weeks.

At 37 weeks and 3 days, on June 14 at 10:29 a.m., our greatest and most long-awaited treasure came into the world by cesarean section due to another rise in my blood pressure.

She weighed 3,070 g, measured 52 cm, and received 10 points on the Apgar scale.

Today, she has completely transformed our lives. Now we feel that we have everything. We have each other, and we have our beloved daughter.

Our heartfelt thanks go first and foremost to the wonderful Dr Adamczyk, who supported us with kind words at every appointment and patiently answered all our questions and concerns.

The atmosphere at Klinika Bocian in Katowice also deserves special recognition. The midwives – especially Dagmara – are kind, caring and incredibly supportive of their patients.

I have a feeling that one day we will be back – unless fate has other plans for us.
